51% Decisions are Usually Just Difficult Decisions

You know those decisions you have to make that could go either way?
It’s 51/49 in your mind, and you’re not sure which side is which.
I’m calling BS.
I think the “51% decisions” almost never are split down the middle.
What they are is difficult decisions. Immensely difficult decisions. Ones with emotional consequences, interpersonal consequences.
They’re choices that can lead to hurt feelings, anger, uncertainty, or financial repercussions.
They’re choices that you will do almost anything to avoid making.
But they are almost never choices that could easily go either way. That’s just the story we tell ourselves to drag out the process, to give ourselves a little more time. Hoping that somehow, during the delay, the decision will simply resolve itself.
You can sit on those decisions for as long as possible, waiting for an unlikely third option to appear.
It’s usually not the most expedient solution. Oftentimes, it’s not the kindest solution, either.
If you’re not ready to make a hard choice, okay. Don’t make it yet.
You’re better off acknowledging the delay instead of pretending it’s an impossible decision.
It probably isn’t.
What’s great about that? It means you already know what choice you need to make.
Now you only have to take the next step.
