Preparation, Luck, and Believing in Miracles

It was 1980, and I was 10 years old.
For two weeks, I was glued to my television. It was a 13-inch, black and white screen, and missing a dial. To change the channel, I used a pair of needle-nose pliers.
Even as a kid, I knew the country needed a win. The Miracle on Ice, US against USSR in the first game of the medal round, gave us one. Every second of the game is etched in my memory.
Later, I’d watch the movie “Miracle” approximately 6,000 times. My absolute favorite film—I still cry every time.
I even had the opportunity to meet Jim Craig, goalie for the US team. A highlight of my life.
I still believe in miracles.

The Miracle on Ice was an inspiration to the entire country. But as a kid, that moment also felt like it spoke directly to me.
I didn’t grow up with much in the way of material wealth. I had an amazing family who loved me, I never truly wanted for anything, and I was happy. But I was also ambitious.
So to see Jim Craig block all those shots, to hear how Herb Brooks instilled belief in his players….it showed me that anything is possible.
Yes, there’s luck, and certain advantages, too. But those tailwinds have to be matched by preparation, a readiness to meet the moment when it arrives.
Chance favors those who persist.

Of course, even with the best preparation, you won’t come out on top every time.
Believing anything is possible is not a surefire guarantee of success. You can’t control every outcome.
But if you practice and prepare enough.
If you play with heart.
And if you truly believe in miracles….
Sometimes, you do get those golden moments.
Congratulations to the Women’s and Men’s USA Hockey Teams. Thank you for reminding us all once again that anything is possible if we give enough of ourselves to a common goal.
I believe.
How about you?
