What kind of day is today?

‍

I could tell you that today is the kind of day you make it. That you can choose optimism, hope, and positivity in the face of adversity.

‍

But that’s not what I’m going to tell you.

‍

What if today…is kind of a crappy day?

‍

What if communicating feels hard, and things keep going wrong, and for a few moments, you even entertain the thought of throwing in the towel?

‍

What if that was okay?

‍

***

‍

I recently saw a video by an Olympic runner talking about a similar concept. I love her framework: the rule of thirds.

‍

When you’re chasing a big dream:

‍

  • ⅓ of the days will be great
  • ⅓ of the days will be okay
  • ⅓ of the days will be crappy

‍

And if you’re roughly in that framework, you’re doing okay.

‍

It doesn’t mean you stop trying. It doesn’t mean you give up on yourself.

‍

Enjoying the ride of entrepreneurship means reveling in the highs and accepting the lows.

‍

Telling yourself things should be any other way can create a downward spiral. Now you’re spending all this energy worrying, and thinking things should be some other way.

‍

Today might be a great day. It might be crappy. Maybe it’s somewhere in between.

‍

Tomorrow can—and probably will be—different.

‍

I find thinking about things this way makes my hard days a little easier.

‍

Things are crappy for all of us sometimes.

‍

But next time you feel that way, remember that it’s because you’re chasing a dream.

‍

And maybe, you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
